A week for the Atlantic and the north

With about a week, I would travel west to the cold Atlantic and then north to Etosha. At Twyfelfontein, animals and tracks cut into sandstone survive from hunter-gatherer life; the final night rests beneath Waterberg's red cliffs and spring-fed woodland.

Atlantic to Etosha itinerary

  1. Days 1–2

    Swakopmund

    In Swakopmund, Atlantic fog sustains wildlife in coastal dunes: you track geckos and sidewinders in the sand, then walk the old town beside the ocean.

    Twyfelfontein

    At UNESCO-listed Twyfelfontein, you walk among thousands of hunter-gatherer engravings depicting giraffes, rhinos, human footprints and animal tracks.

    Etosha

    In Etosha, an immense salt pan concentrates wildlife around scarce water, so you follow fresh tracks at dawn and watch elephants, giraffes and antelope gather at selected waterholes.

    Waterberg

    At Waterberg, permanent springs feed green woodland beneath a red sandstone plateau, where you hike to a viewpoint and trace the plateau's conservation history.

    Back in Windhoek, Namibia's compact highland capital, you visit the Namibia Craft Centre and finish with lunch in one of the city's shaded gardens.
