Ruacana and the Kunene

Ruacana marks the turn from remote Kaokoland toward north-central Namibia, beside a Kunene waterfall whose flow changes dramatically through the year.

Place overview

Ruacana and the Kunene

Ruacana sits where the Kunene River, an international border and hydropower infrastructure meet a dramatic rock escarpment.

The waterfall is highly variable. A responsible journey shows the conditions of the day rather than promising the flood image used in postcards.

For Epic Namibia, Ruacana turns the road from Etosha toward Epupa into a meaningful northern transition.

Ruacana is a lesson in variability: rock, river engineering and a waterfall that may thunder or reveal its bare face.

Designer's note

Follow the Kunene east

I never promise the high-water image. I stop at Ruacana to see how the Kunene, power station and border history have shaped life around a waterfall that changes dramatically with the river.

I design long Namibia journeys around landscape change, local interpretation and time in the right place.

  1. 01

    Follow the Kunene east

The road leaves Epupa through riverine forest and arid hills.

    Border corridor
  2. 02

See the falls as they are

Flow may be immense or restrained; both reveal the river's managed reality.

    Seasonal truth
  3. 03

    Turn toward Etosha

Ruacana breaks an otherwise punishing road and opens the north-central landscape.

    Transit with purpose

Swakopmund on Namibia's Atlantic coast
April to June

Dune light and coastal fog

Shoulder-season desert light

A strong shoulder season for mixed routes: cooler mornings in the dunes, fresh Atlantic fog on the coast, and steadier driving days before peak safari season fills up.

Swakopmund · Sossusvlei · Twyfelfontein
Safari landscape in Etosha National Park
May to August

Cool dry winter for long roads and safari

Dry-season waterholes

Clear skies, cold mornings, and the easiest road-trip rhythm for first-timers. Wildlife concentrates around water, the coast stays crisp, and the desert light is clean.

Near freezing at dawn inland to about 24 °C by day

Spring heat and big skies

Dry heat before the rains

The build-up to summer. The heat rises fast in the desert and Etosha can be hard by midday, but the roads stay dry and the skies often look enormous and theatrical.

Place FAQ

Ruacana and the Kunene travel questions

Q01Why include Ruacana and the Kunene in Epic Namibia?

Follow the river east from Epupa, read a greener border landscape, and treat the falls as seasonal rather than guaranteed spectacle.

Q02When is the best time for Ruacana and the Kunene?

River flow varies; May to September gives cooler road travel but not guaranteed full falls.
