Gobabis and Omaheke

Gobabis sits on Namibia's eastern road from Botswana, surrounded by cattle country, thornveld and the first red Kalahari sand after the border.

Eastern Namibia

The road back into Namibia

Gobabis is the principal eastern town of Omaheke, close to the Trans-Kalahari Highway and surrounded by thornveld, cattle country and red sand.

For Epic Namibia, its importance is geographic as well as local. The journey can return from Ghanzi, complete border formalities and stop here instead of retreating through Windhoek. The following morning turns south toward Mariental and the Namibian Kalahari.

After Botswana, Gobabis is where the Namibian road returns beneath the wheels: thornveld, cattle country and red sand beginning to gather again.

Designer's note

Do not force the road through Windhoek

I use Gobabis to reveal eastern Namibia, where cattle country and thornveld meet the first red Kalahari sand. It gives Omaheke a real place in the journey instead of treating the border as empty road.

I design long routes so border formalities and transfer nights protect the landscapes around them.

  1. 01

    Finish the border day here

Immigration, vehicle paperwork and road uncertainty receive their own daylight instead of consuming the Kalahari arrival.

    Route discipline
  2. 02

    See eastern Namibia

Thornveld, cattle country and red sand make Omaheke more than a fuel stop.

    Overlooked region
  3. 03

    Turn south without backtracking

The next road reaches the Kalahari without revisiting Windhoek or crossing the flagship line.

The build-up to summer. The heat rises fast in the desert and Etosha can be hard by midday, but the roads stay dry and the skies often look enormous and theatrical.

Gobabis FAQ

Gobabis and Omaheke travel questions

Q01Why does Epic Namibia stop in Gobabis?

It gives the Botswana border day a proper end and allows the route to turn south toward the Kalahari without revisiting Windhoek.

Q02Is Gobabis only a transit stop?

It performs transit work, but Omaheke also introduces an overlooked eastern Namibia of thornveld, cattle country and Kalahari sand.
