Wildlife against a white horizon
Etosha begins with whiteness: an immense salt pan bleaching the horizon, thorn trees casting small pools of shade, dust rising before you can see what moves inside it. Then animals appear - springbok first, perhaps, or the high, deliberate walk of a giraffe.
At the waterhole, impatience slowly leaves the car. Hooves disturb the edge. Birds flicker down and away. If elephants come, the empty afternoon you waited through becomes part of the memory.
At first the waterhole looks empty. Stay. A springbok steps from the dust, giraffe appear beyond it, and the whole afternoon quietly changes.
