Twyfelfontein
Thousands of engravings lie across Twyfelfontein's sun-darkened sandstone: giraffe, rhino, footprints and animal tracks waiting for a guide to bring them forward.
Twyfelfontein in brief
Namibia's first World Heritage stop
Twyfelfontein holds one of Africa's great concentrations of rock engravings. Across sun-darkened sandstone, giraffe stretch their long necks, rhino stand in profile, and tracks cross the stone toward water remembered by people thousands of years ago.
A guide changes the pace of seeing. You stop looking at the valley as a whole and begin following one line at a time: horn, hoof, paw, footprint. Warm stone becomes an archive under your hand.
A giraffe appears first, then a rhino and a trail of prints. The guide points once, and the warm stone begins giving up its animals.

Let a guide teach you how to look
I keep the morning cool and the pace unhurried. A guide's knowledge turns isolated marks into animals, paths and a human presence that still feels close.

I build heritage stops around interpretation rather than drive-by prestige.
- 01Interpretation matters
Follow the pointing hand
The figures and tracks emerge gradually as a guide leads you from one sandstone surface to the next.
- 02Timing
Walk before the stone heats
Morning brings kinder light and cooler rock to a valley where shade is precious.
- 03Narrative shift
Look beyond the famous lion
Giraffe, rhino, footprints and animal tracks spread across the site; every surface rewards closer attention.

Twyfelfontein FAQ
Twyfelfontein travel guide FAQ
Q01Is Twyfelfontein worth it on a first Namibia trip?
Yes, if the route already goes through the west-to-north corridor. It adds guided human memory between the dunes and Etosha.
Q02Do I need a guide at Twyfelfontein?
I strongly recommend one. The engravings are far more memorable when interpreted rather than simply viewed as a checklist site.
