Quiver Tree Forest and Keetmanshoop
North-east of Keetmanshoop, quiver trees lift forked silhouettes above black dolerite boulders and the dry Nama Karoo.
Place overview
Quiver Tree Forest and Keetmanshoop
Keetmanshoop is the gateway to a landscape stranger than a simple transit map suggests. Quiver trees rise from dry ground while dolerite boulders balance in great dark heaps nearby.
The trees reward the edges of the day: pale bark and yellow-green crowns in the last sun, then black silhouettes against a sky still holding colour.
The flagship pauses here after Fish River Canyon, allowing quiver trees and boulder fields to carry the deep south toward the Kalahari.
At sunset the quiver trees become figures: pale branching arms above a field of dark stone.

Meet the quiver trees
I arrive before sunset, when quiver-tree trunks turn gold above black dolerite boulders, then return in the cool morning for a second walk through this strange southern landscape.

I design long Namibia journeys around landscape change, local interpretation and time in the right place.
- 01Nama Karoo
Meet the quiver trees
Their thick trunks and forked crowns stand apart against the open southern sky.
- 02Giant's Playground
Cross the boulder field
Dolerite blocks gather in improbable stacks beyond the trees.
- 03Sunset
Stay for silhouette
The landscape becomes most graphic when the sun falls behind the branching crowns.
