Place overview

Kavango River at Rundu

Rundu gathers much of its life along the Kavango River. Boats cross the water, fields occupy fertile strips and commerce connects the town to a long inhabited border.

A maker or river guide gives the stop its centre. The encounter must be arranged with a real person before publication, but its role is clear: the north-east needs human texture as much as wildlife.

The flagship reaches Rundu after Zambezi, then keeps a full day here before turning south-west toward Etosha.

After the dry west, the Kavango feels abundant: boats on moving water, cultivated banks and a sunset doubled in the river.

Designer's note

Meet the river

I keep a full day beside the Kavango at Rundu: boats on the water, cultivated riverbanks and time with a maker or river guide in one of Namibia's most lived-in northern landscapes.

I design long Namibia journeys around landscape change, local interpretation and time in the right place.

  1. 01

    Meet the river

A boat or bank walk reveals daily movement along an international waterway.

    Kavango
  2. 02

    Follow local making

Wood carving, baskets and clay belong to working livelihoods, not souvenir shorthand.

    Maker encounter
  3. 03

    Wait for sunset

The broad water holds the last colour long after the road heat fades.

Best time

Best time to visit Kavango River at Rundu

Swakopmund on Namibia's Atlantic coast
April to June

Dune light and coastal fog

Shoulder-season desert light

A strong shoulder season for mixed routes: cooler mornings in the dunes, fresh Atlantic fog on the coast, and steadier driving days before peak safari season fills up.

Good places
Swakopmund · Sossusvlei · Twyfelfontein
Safari landscape in Etosha National Park
May to August

Cool dry winter for long roads and safari

Dry-season waterholes

Clear skies, cold mornings, and the easiest road-trip rhythm for first-timers. Wildlife concentrates around water, the coast stays crisp, and the desert light is clean.

Temp
Near freezing at dawn inland to about 24 °C by day

Busy but manageable

September to October

Spring heat and big skies

Dry heat before the rains

The build-up to summer. The heat rises fast in the desert and Etosha can be hard by midday, but the roads stay dry and the skies often look enormous and theatrical.

Temp
About 12 to 35 °C

Medium season
