Kalahari at Mariental
Long red dunes run parallel through the Kalahari east of Mariental, with pale grass in their folds and gemsbok tracks crossing the sand.
Place overview
Kalahari at Mariental
The Namib is not Namibia's only desert. East of Mariental, the Kalahari rises in long red ridges divided by grass, thorn trees and animal paths.
Morning belongs on foot, when the sand is cool enough to hold a clear record of what moved through the night. Evening changes the same dunes again, deepening rust into red.
In Epic Namibia, the Kalahari is the last red threshold before the road turns west toward Sossusvlei.
The dunes are lower than Sossusvlei and more intimate: red ridges, grass between them, and tracks crossing before breakfast.

Walk while the sand is cool
I use the Kalahari as a true beginning, not a hurried overnight between Windhoek and the canyon.

Alex
Journey designer
I design long Namibia journeys around landscape change, local interpretation and time in the right place.
- 01Early dune walk
Walk while the sand is cool
A guide reads the night's tracks before wind and feet soften them.
- 02Kalahari evening
Watch the grass take the light
Low sun turns each red ridge into a long shadowed line.
- 03Night sky
Let darkness arrive
Away from the capital, the first road night reveals the scale above as well as around you.
