Windhoek experience

Trace Namibia's road to independence

Move from colonial rule through resistance to independence across the three floors of Windhoek's Independence Memorial Museum.

The experience

Begin Namibia with the history that shaped it

The Independence Memorial Museum follows Namibia from colonial occupation through armed resistance and the achievement of independence in 1990.

Visit it before the long road north: the borderlands, memorials and living cultures ahead make more sense when the country's own liberation story comes first.

Experience FAQ

Trace Namibia's road to independence

Q01How long should we allow?

About ninety minutes gives the three historical floors time to register without turning arrival day into a lecture.

Q02Is the museum always open?

No. Opening days and public access can change, so I reconfirm them for the travel date.

Plan with Alex

Plan the museum visit

Cross Deadvlei at dawn, follow desert wildlife tracks near Swakopmund and wait beside an Etosha waterhole as elephants emerge through the dust.

We will begin with your dates, your pace and the image that brought Namibia into your mind. From there, I will draw the journey that belongs to you.

Portrait of Alex

I want Namibia's defining moments at their best: Deadvlei before the heat, the living desert while tracks are still sharp, Etosha as elephants approach the water. Around them, we make time for the guides, makers and conservationists who turn a beautiful road into a journey you understand.
