Waterberg Plateau Park experience

Walk Waterberg's 1904 history trail

Follow the ground where Ovaherero resistance, German colonial war and the forced flight into the Omaheke became a turning point in Namibia's genocide.

The experience

Face the history carried by this beautiful plateau

In 1904, the battle at Waterberg was followed by the forced flight of Ovaherero families into the waterless Omaheke and the colonial campaign of extermination.

The trail visits battlefield and detention-camp ground; the experience should be led or supplemented by Ovaherero interpretation, not reduced to German military relics.

Experience FAQ

Walk Waterberg's 1904 history trail

Q01Is this primarily a battlefield tour?

No. Its purpose is to understand colonial dispossession, Ovaherero resistance and the genocide that followed.

Q02Who interprets the history?

The path has information boards, but I will not promise a hosted version until an appropriate Ovaherero historian or guide is confirmed.

Plan with Alex

Plan the history walk

Cross Deadvlei at dawn, follow desert wildlife tracks near Swakopmund and wait beside an Etosha waterhole as elephants emerge through the dust.

We will begin with your dates, your pace and the image that brought Namibia into your mind. From there, I will draw the journey that belongs to you.

Portrait of Alex

I want Namibia's defining moments at their best: Deadvlei before the heat, the living desert while tracks are still sharp, Etosha as elephants approach the water. Around them, we make time for the guides, makers and conservationists who turn a beautiful road into a journey you understand.
