San Luis travel guide
San Luis and Sierra de las Quijadas
San Luis earns the second westbound stage with Sierra de las Quijadas, a desert basin of red walls, fossils and long evening light. It prepares the eye for Argentina's geological north.
Why this place matters
The first red stone on the northern road
Sierra de las Quijadas rises abruptly from western San Luis. Erosion has opened red walls and dry channels inside a broad basin where fossil evidence reaches far beyond human time.
A park guide changes the visit from scenery into process: water that once moved here, species preserved in stone and desert life adapted to the heat now.
After two days of level country, Sierra de las Quijadas lifts the horizon and lets deep time enter the journey before Mendoza.

Let geology announce the west
I use San Luis for more than a practical night. A guided walk in the sierra makes the shift from Pampas to desert visible and physical.

Enter the basin early
Cooler light reveals folds, cliffs and desert vegetation.
- 02Deep time
Walk with a park voice
Fossils and ecology replace resemblance-based rock names.
- 03Pacing
Reach Mendoza rested
The next road day remains moderate after a complete landscape.
