A vanished world beneath a pale desert

Ischigualasto spreads across a pale, exposed basin where erosion has isolated spheres, columns and harder stone from softer ground. The popular lunar comparison is immediate but incomplete.

Its fossil record gives the place global weight. A knowledgeable guide can reconstruct ecosystems that existed here long before the Andes rose to their present scale.

The formations catch the eye, but the fossils are the deeper event: evidence that this dry basin once held an entirely different world.
