Argentina Andes and high-desert journeys

Follow vineyards, Triassic basins, volcanic Puna, salt and coloured valleys along the western half of northern Argentina.

A way into Argentina

Climb from irrigation water into mineral country

Argentina's western road follows the Andes without holding one constant altitude. Vineyards sit beneath snow peaks; pale fossil basins turn red; volcanic plateau rises above 3,000 metres.

The most remote landscapes are not casual rental-car detours. Local drivers, acclimatisation and current road information are part of travelling them well.

The Andes arrive by degrees: first as Mendoza's distant wall, then as red canyon, white pumice, salt and a road where altitude changes the body.

Designer's note

Let altitude build slowly

I use Mendoza, San Juan and La Rioja to approach the Puna rather than flying into thin air. Remote days belong to local 4x4 drivers who know what the road has become.

I design high-desert journeys from Mendoza's irrigated shade to ancient basins and the thin air of the Puna.

  1. 01

    Begin with water

Mendoza reveals how dry country is made habitable.

    Irrigated west
  2. 02

    Enter deep time

Ischigualasto and Talampaya slow the geological story.

    Triassic basins
  3. 03

    Reach the Puna with support

Catamarca and Jujuy require altitude and road judgement.

Best time

Best time for andes and high desert

White pumice formations beneath the high Andes in Catamarca
April to November

Dry months for the Andes and Puna

High-desert clarity

The northwest is generally driest outside summer rain, with clear mountain light and cold high-altitude nights. Iguazú and Iberá remain warm, and their water levels still answer to rainfall upstream.

Temp
About -5 to 30 °C across altitude zones
Crowds
Clear roads, cold nights
Good places
Mendoza · Catamarca Puna · Salta · Quebrada de Humahuaca

Theme FAQ

Planning andes and high desert

Q01Which Epic carries this theme?

Epic Northern Argentina carries it through the complete Buenos Aires circle.

Q02Can this be the main reason for my journey?

Yes. We can give more time to vineyards, archaeology, high-altitude landscapes or living Andean culture while keeping the gradual ascent that protects your body.
