Santa Cruz travel guide
Monte León
Monte León is the first complete protected coast north of Río Gallegos. Trails and ranger interpretation connect marine colonies, former ranching land and the meeting of steppe with ocean.
Why this place matters
Where the steppe ends in a vertical Atlantic
Monte León protects a section of Santa Cruz coast where broad steppe falls into pale cliffs and beaches. Guanacos remain above while seabirds and marine mammals occupy the edge below.
The park's former ranching history prevents a simple wilderness story. Conservation, work and wildlife have each shaped the same ground.
For hours the sea remains hidden beyond level country. At Monte León it appears suddenly below cliffs, loud and full of life.

Walk the first Atlantic coast
I give Monte León a full day so tide, trail access and wildlife can choose the line. It should not be reduced to a roadside break.
