Los Alerces

Los Alerces brings the Patagonia circle fully into the Andes. Forest walks, lake travel and a Trevelin encounter connect ancient trees, watershed conservation and Welsh Patagonian history.

Why this place matters

Old forest reflected in dark water

Los Alerces National Park protects Andean forest and a chain of lakes west of Esquel. Alerce trees grow slowly and can reach extraordinary age, giving the forest a different sense of time.

Nearby Trevelin adds agricultural and Welsh migration history. A serious local encounter avoids reducing that history to tea and costumes.

After weeks of steppe and Atlantic light, Los Alerces closes around the traveller in shade, rain and lake water held beneath the Andes.

Designer's note

Travel the park by foot and water

I keep several days for different forest perspectives and one encounter around Trevelin. The park should not become a scenic drive to Bariloche.

I combine an alerce forest walk, a day on the lakes and a carefully chosen encounter with Welsh Patagonian history around Trevelin.

Patagonia's long-road season

Open roads and long light

Longer daylight, open mountain roads and more dependable ferry operations make this the primary window for the full Patagonia circle. Wind and rapid weather changes remain part of every day.

Lenga forests turn copper and the busiest trails soften, but daylight shortens and early snow can close higher roads. The full cross-border circle needs careful date-by-date checks.
