The Catamarca Puna is the northern circle's most remote high-altitude landscape. Campo de Piedra Pómez, lagoons and volcanic basins require specialist vehicles, acclimatisation and local judgement.

Why this place matters
White stone, black lava and a sky emptied of scale
Around Antofagasta de la Sierra, volcanic country opens into salt, lava, lagoons and pale pumice. The Campo de Piedra Pómez looks wind-sculpted because it is: a vast deposit reshaped into ridges and corridors.
Distance is not the only challenge. Elevation changes breathing and judgement, while tracks respond quickly to rain, snow and wind. Local drivers hold the route together.
The Puna strips the landscape to mineral, wind and altitude, then restores human scale through a village, a loom or a guide who knows which road still exists.
