I design journeys to places of power for those who want to travel deeper
Santa Cruz travel guide
Cueva de las Manos
Cueva de las Manos returns the Chilean road to Argentina through deep human time. Authorised interpretation keeps the paintings, canyon and people who made them inseparable.
Why this place matters
Human presence held above a canyon
Cueva de las Manos occupies rock shelters above the Pinturas River canyon in north-western Santa Cruz. Layers of hand stencils and animal scenes were made across thousands of years.
The site is strongest in place. Canyon approach, pigments, scale and interpretation resist turning the images into detached symbols.
The hands are intimate because they remain attached to rock, wind and the long Pinturas canyon. Removed from that landscape, they lose half their meaning.

Enter with authorised interpretation
I place Cueva de las Manos immediately after the Chile Chico crossing. It restores human depth before the immense Ruta 40 stage to El Chaltén.
