Skeleton Coast experience

Stand among Cape Cross fur seals

Follow the reserve boardwalk into the sound, smell and movement of one of the world's largest Cape fur seal breeding colonies.

The experience

Enter the full sensory force of a seal colony

At Cape Cross, the boardwalk runs through a breeding colony that can hold tens of thousands of Cape fur seals.

This is not a tidy wildlife portrait: pups call, adults quarrel, scavengers circle and the cold Atlantic feeds the entire concentration.

Experience FAQ

Stand among Cape Cross fur seals

Q01When is the colony largest?

Numbers rise during the November and December breeding season, but seals are present beyond that peak.

Q02Is the visit suitable for everyone?

The noise, smell, exposed weather and sight of dead animals can be intense; travelers should know that before entering.

Plan with Alex

Plan Cape Cross

Cross Deadvlei at dawn, follow desert wildlife tracks near Swakopmund and wait beside an Etosha waterhole as elephants emerge through the dust.

We will begin with your dates, your pace and the image that brought Namibia into your mind. From there, I will draw the journey that belongs to you.

Portrait of Alex

I want Namibia's defining moments at their best: Deadvlei before the heat, the living desert while tracks are still sharp, Etosha as elephants approach the water. Around them, we make time for the guides, makers and conservationists who turn a beautiful road into a journey you understand.
