Fog-fed desert along the Skeleton Coast

Skeleton Coast experience

See the Cape Cross lichen fields

Look closely at a fragile desert community that survives almost entirely on fog along one of the driest coasts on earth.

The experience

Find a living carpet sustained by fog

North of Wlotzkasbaken and Cape Cross, extensive lichen fields draw moisture from Atlantic fog where measurable rain is scarce.

The experience is deliberately restrained: a specialist helps you see color, texture and survival without walking or driving over the organisms themselves.

Experience FAQ

See the Cape Cross lichen fields

Q01Can we walk across the lichen fields?

No. Lichens are easily crushed and recover extremely slowly, so we observe from approved access with a guide.

Q02Why are they easier to see in fog?

Moisture activates the lichens and deepens their colors, making a community that can look dormant in dry air suddenly visible.

Plan with Alex

Plan the lichen stop

Cross Deadvlei at dawn, follow desert wildlife tracks near Swakopmund and wait beside an Etosha waterhole as elephants emerge through the dust.

We will begin with your dates, your pace and the image that brought Namibia into your mind. From there, I will draw the journey that belongs to you.

Portrait of Alex

I want Namibia's defining moments at their best: Deadvlei before the heat, the living desert while tracks are still sharp, Etosha as elephants approach the water. Around them, we make time for the guides, makers and conservationists who turn a beautiful road into a journey you understand.
