The experience is deliberately restrained: a specialist helps you see color, texture and survival without walking or driving over the organisms themselves.

No. Lichens are easily crushed and recover extremely slowly, so we observe from approved access with a guide.
Moisture activates the lichens and deepens their colors, making a community that can look dormant in dry air suddenly visible.
