Makgadikgadi Pans experience

Cross the Makgadikgadi salt pans

Travel onto the salt-crusted bed of an immense vanished lake, where seasonal water can turn a white horizon into wetland.

The experience

Stand inside the basin of a vanished lake

Makgadikgadi is a system of salt pans left by a prehistoric lake, opening into a horizon almost without scale when the surface is dry.

A guide explains crust, grassland and seasonal water while choosing a route that will not damage the pan or strand the vehicle.

Experience FAQ

Cross the Makgadikgadi salt pans

Q01Can we cross in the wet season?

Often not. Rain can turn the surface into mud and water, making access unsafe and environmentally damaging.

Q02Is quad biking part of the experience?

Not automatically. I prioritize a low-impact guided crossing or walk suited to current surface conditions.

Plan with Alex

Plan the pan crossing

Cross Deadvlei at dawn, follow desert wildlife tracks near Swakopmund and wait beside an Etosha waterhole as elephants emerge through the dust.

We will begin with your dates, your pace and the image that brought Namibia into your mind. From there, I will draw the journey that belongs to you.

Portrait of Alex

I want Namibia's defining moments at their best: Deadvlei before the heat, the living desert while tracks are still sharp, Etosha as elephants approach the water. Around them, we make time for the guides, makers and conservationists who turn a beautiful road into a journey you understand.
