Viljandi keeps what most towns lose. On the castle hills, the ruins of a Livonian Order stronghold stand over a lake that fills the whole view south, and below them a small wooden town goes about its life at walking pace.

What makes it more than a pretty stop is the music. Viljandi is Estonia's folk music capital — home of the Estonian Traditional Music Center, and every late July, host to the folk festival that turns the castle hills into stages and the whole town into an audience. The old songs are not preserved here; they are played.
