Tartu, the university city
Tartu has been a university town since 1632, and four centuries of students have shaped it into Estonia's most companionable city: bookshops, museums, café tables along the Emajõgi, and a hill at the center where the old university buildings stand among the trees.
The Estonian National Museum sits at the edge of town on a former Soviet airfield — the building itself is a long glass wedge rising out of the old runway. Inside is the whole story of this country, told with the quiet confidence of a small nation that kept its language through everything.
From Tartu the route runs naturally east: under an hour to the first Old Believer villages on Lake Peipsi, where the onion beds and tea houses begin. Or south, into the small hills and lake country that Estonians mostly keep for themselves.
