Hiiumaa, the quiet island
Hiiumaa is the island Estonians recommend in a lower voice. The ferry from Rohuküla takes just over an hour, and it lands you somewhere with three lighthouses, a handful of villages, and a sea horizon in almost every direction.
The Kõpu lighthouse is the island's elder: first lit in 1531, one of the oldest working lighthouses on earth, a white stone pyramid on the island's high ground. To the south, the Sääretirp spit walks straight out into the sea — a narrowing tongue of stones and juniper where the land simply gives up.
Days here are made of small things done slowly. A swim from an empty beach. Smoked flounder from a village smokehouse. An evening walk to a lighthouse while the light turns long. Hiiumaa does not perform — that is the entire point.
I use Hiiumaa in island loops with Saaremaa, and as its own slow week for travelers who want Estonia at its quietest. Guided or self-guided — tell me how much silence you are after, and I will build the route to match.

Hiiumaa is smaller, quieter, and greener: three lighthouses, pine coast, empty beaches, and roads where you mostly meet the forest. Saaremaa has the castle and the kitchens; Hiiumaa has the silence.
Q02Should Hiiumaa be included with Saaremaa?
If the trip gives the west five days or more, yes. A direct ferry links Hiiumaa and Saaremaa, so the two islands make one natural loop.
