Haapsalu in brief
Castle walls, sea air and impossible lace
Haapsalu grew around a medieval bishop's castle and later reinvented itself as a seaside resort. The small town still lets you walk directly from fortress walls to timber villas, a long promenade and the railway pavilion built for imperial visitors.
Its most distinctive living tradition is knitted lace. Haapsalu's masters turn fine yarn and exact pattern charts into openwork shawls that become almost weightless after stretching, and the local handicraft society continues to meet and teach.
The town belongs naturally at the end of an island route. The ferry from Hiiumaa lands at nearby Rohuküla, making Haapsalu the place where the Baltic journey returns to the mainland without losing its intimacy.
Haapsalu gives the island route a human ending: walk from the bishop's castle to the wooden promenade, then meet knitters whose shawls turn thousands of exact stitches into something almost weightless.

The ferry from Hiiumaa lands less than half an hour away. I use that short distance to change the rhythm: one last small town, one living craft and enough time to understand why nineteenth-century visitors came here for the sea air.
