Viljandi Folk Festival

Estonia special event · Four days in late July, on and around Viljandi's castle hills

Every late July, Estonia's folk music capital fills its castle hills with stages: four days when the country's biggest folk gathering plays old songs to young crowds, above a lake, inside a ruin.

Designer's note

Build the southern journey around Viljandi Folk

I would make the festival the high point of a southern Estonia journey. A full day on the castle hills, an evening concert and time with the region's music culture deserve more than a rushed visit from Tallinn.

Event FAQ

Viljandi Folk FAQ

Q01Do I need tickets in advance?

Yes — festival passes and the town's accommodation both sell out well ahead of late July. This is the one Estonian event where I ask travelers to start planning months early, and I handle the bookings as part of the trip.

Q02Is one day enough?

One full day gives you the festival's heart — stages, workshops, the evening concerts. Music lovers happily stay for more; I build the stay to match how deep you want to go.
