Saaremaa, Estonia's great island

Saaremaa begins on the water. The crossing takes half an hour — just long enough for the mainland to lose its grip — and the island receives you with juniper heaths, dry stone fences, and windmills standing in a row on the Angla ridge.

In the middle of the island lies its strangest treasure: Kaali, a round green lake in a crater punched out by a meteorite thousands of years ago. Iron Age people built a wall around it, and some scholars hear its fall echoed in old northern songs about the sun dropping from the sky. Saaremaa wears the story lightly; the lake sits a short walk from the road.

Kuressaare anchors the south: a genuinely medieval castle on the water, spa streets that have drawn bathers since the 1840s, and kitchens that fill softly on summer evenings. Beyond it the roads thin toward the capes — the Sõrve lighthouse at the island's southern tip, the Panga cliff on the north shore — and the traffic simply drops away.
