An hour east of Tallinn the highway lets go of the city and Lahemaa begins: old pine forest, bog plateaus, and a coast scattered with boulders the ice age left behind. In 1971 this became the first national park in the whole Soviet Union — Estonians protected it a generation before they got their country back.
The park works like four worlds stacked together. The Viru bog boardwalk crosses a moss plateau dotted with dark pools. The coast bends through fishing villages — Altja with its net sheds on the shore, Käsmu where sea captains built their houses a century ago. Inland, the baroque manor of Palmse sits in its park like a held breath.
Lahemaa makes the perfect first day of a longer journey. Morning in the capital, afternoon on the bog, evening in a village tavern with smoked fish from the coast. From here the route can turn anywhere — south to Tartu and Lake Peipsi, west to the islands, or deeper into bog country at Soomaa.

Q02How is Lahemaa different from Soomaa?
Choose Lahemaa for forest, bog and Baltic coast within an hour of Tallinn. Choose Soomaa for larger bogs, river country and the spring flood; a week-long journey can include both.
Q03Should Lahemaa be a day trip or overnight?
A day trip works. An overnight in Käsmu or Altja is better — the villages empty out in the evening, and the coast at dawn belongs to you.
