Islands

Kihnu, Saaremaa and Hiiumaa run on ferry time: living island culture, lighthouses, windmills and roads that thin out toward the Baltic.

Experience overview

Three islands, three different reasons to cross

Estonia's west breaks into islands with different reasons to cross. Kihnu keeps a living cultural space of songs, crafts and seafaring traditions; Saaremaa has the castle town, windmills and juniper roads; Hiiumaa opens into lighthouses, pines and quiet beaches.

The crossing sets the tempo. Half an hour of open water, gulls holding station over the stern, and the obligation to hurry stays behind on the mainland. The island roads do the rest — straight, empty, lined with juniper, ending at capes and lighthouses.

Time works differently out west. The Jaanipäev bonfires burn brightest on the islands, the summer kitchens smoke their own fish, and the windmills at Angla have held their ridge for generations.

I design private island journeys of four days to a week, guided or self-guided. Tell me your dates, and I will plan the crossings, stays and long coastal days.

Kihnu is the island of living culture, Saaremaa of castles and windmills, and Hiiumaa of lighthouses and open coast. Each crossing changes the journey in a different way.

Designer's note

Give each island a reason

I use Kihnu for its living culture, Saaremaa for the great island road trip and Hiiumaa for the quieter final crossing. The ferries connect them, but each earns its own days.

I design island journeys around ferry times, coastal weather, local food and long days that end at lighthouses.

  1. 01

    Stand on deck

The crossing takes half an hour of open water — by the far ramp the mainland has already loosened its grip.

  2. 02

    Choose Saaremaa first

Saaremaa gives the first island trip its shape: Kuressaare's castle, the Angla windmills, the Kaali crater, and kitchens worth the drive.

    Add Hiiumaa for the silence

Three lighthouses, pine coast, and beaches that stay quiet in July. A direct ferry links the two islands into one loop.

Estonia islands FAQ

Island route questions before planning

Q01Which Estonian island should I choose first?

Saaremaa first: the castle town, the windmills, the crater, the food. Hiiumaa when you want silence and lighthouses — or as the second half of an island loop.

Q02Are Estonia's islands worth it on a short trip?

With four days or more, absolutely — the west becomes the heart of the trip. On a two-or-three-day route I usually keep the journey on the mainland and save the islands for a trip that can give them time.
