The experience
Tallinn preserves the plan of a medieval Baltic trading city with unusual completeness. Walk from the guild streets and merchants' houses of the lower town to Toompea, where a separate seat of power looked down across the walls.
The value is not a string of photogenic buildings. It is seeing how port trade, religion, craft guilds and government occupied different parts of one compact city, and how that structure still shapes Tallinn today.
