The experience
Few European borders can be understood so immediately. Hermann Castle rises on the Estonian bank while Ivangorod Fortress answers from Russia, their towers separated by a river narrow enough to see people on the opposite promenade.
Walk the Estonian bank and enter Narva Castle for the longer history. The experience is not about staring across a frontier; it is about understanding how the same strategic crossing has been repeatedly fortified, destroyed and redefined.
