When spring water leaves the rivers and enters roads, meadows and forest, paddle with a local guide through the fifth season that has shaped life in Soomaa for generations.
The experience
Soomaa's fifth season begins when snowmelt and rain overwhelm four rivers. Water spreads across meadows, roads and forest until places normally reached on foot become canoe passages between tree trunks and farm edges.
A local guide reads the current, chooses the safe route and explains how floodwater shaped settlement, haymaking and boat use. If the flood does not come, the canoe remains the right way to experience the river system that creates it.
