Meet the knitters who still work Haapsalu's impossibly fine openwork shawls, seeing how written patterns, exact tension and thousands of stitches create a textile light enough to pass through a ring.
The experience
Haapsalu shawls are knitted from fine yarn into elaborate openwork, then stretched until the pattern opens and the textile becomes almost weightless. At the lace centre, active masters show the charts, needles, tension and patient correction hidden behind that delicacy.
The encounter gives the journey a precise final human scale. After islands defined by sea and distance, Haapsalu reveals a mainland resort town through a craft built stitch by stitch and passed between generations of women.

The society holds regular public master gatherings, and a private introduction can be requested; the exact people are confirmed for the date.
A short introduction may be arranged, but a full shawl requires advanced skill and extensive time. Seeing pattern samples and work in progress is central to the visit.
