The experience
Kuressaare Castle survives as a complete fortified world: moat, walls, courtyard, cloistered passages and massive rooms built for both defense and authority. Moving through it makes Saaremaa's strategic position in the Baltic tangible.
The island-history exhibitions extend the story beyond medieval bishops, but the strongest experience is architectural. Few places in the region allow you to understand a fortress so clearly by walking its actual structure.
