Wild Coast

The Wild Coast runs through green hills, river mouths, cliffs and beaches that no continuous coastal road has domesticated. It is also lived Xhosa country, not an empty wilderness.

A coast the road never conquered

The Wild Coast resists a neat line. Rivers cut the green hills, gravel roads turn inland and paths descend toward beaches backed by grazing cattle and scattered homes.

At Hole in the Wall, the ocean has opened an arch through dark rock. Yet the coast's meaning is larger than one formation. It lives in river crossings, Xhosa communities, weather, walking and the knowledge of people whose everyday landscape is the view travelers came to find.

The road stays inland because rivers and cliffs keep breaking the coast. To understand it, leave the car and walk with someone who lives above the sea.

There is no simple continuous coastal road. The journey uses inland links and slower local approaches to selected bases.
