Panorama Route and Blyde River Canyon

The Highveld breaks open along Mpumalanga's escarpment. Waterfalls, forest and the green walls of Blyde River Canyon announce the descent toward the Lowveld.

Panorama Route in brief

Where the Highveld falls away

Mpumalanga's escarpment is the first great rupture in the journey. The plateau ends, the Lowveld drops away and Blyde River Canyon curves through cliffs green enough to surprise anyone expecting only dry safari country.

Water falls from forested edges after summer rain. In winter, clearer air reaches farther across the plains. The road into Kruger then becomes a descent through climate and vegetation, not merely the distance between two attractions.

The first great landscape arrives as an edge: plateau behind you, Lowveld below and a canyon holding green water between them.

Designer's note

Wait for Blyde River Canyon to appear

I keep enough time for Blyde River Canyon to emerge between clouds, with waterfalls and short escarpment walks filling the hours when the great view disappears.

I build the Kruger approach around canyon light, waterfalls and the change from plateau to Lowveld.

  1. 01

    Reach the rim early

Morning light gives the canyon walls depth before haze gathers over the Lowveld.

    Clearer first hours
  2. 02

    Walk beyond the car park

Short paths and waterfall approaches let the escarpment become physical.

    Feet before viewpoints
  3. 03

    Descend unhurried

The road into the Lowveld is part of the transformation toward Kruger.

Panorama FAQ

Panorama Route travel questions

Q01Is the Panorama Route only a drive to Kruger?

No. Blyde River Canyon and the escarpment earn a full day and at least one night.

Q02What if the viewpoints are cloudy?

Move with the weather, use shorter walks and protect enough time for the cloud to lift.
