A city built around extraction
Kimberley's Big Hole turns extraction into landscape. The scale is blunt: earth removed, wealth concentrated and a city assembled around the demand for diamonds.
The deeper story belongs to labour, compounds and the systems that mining helped build. Near the end of Epic South Africa, Kimberley returns the journey from desert silence to the human forces that shaped Johannesburg and the country beyond it.
The hole is spectacular. The more important story is what diamonds demanded from land, labour and the future country growing around them.
