Johannesburg

Johannesburg rises from the Highveld in towers, mine dumps, jacarandas and neighbourhoods still remaking themselves. Begin with artists and constitutional history before the wildlife road opens east.

Johannesburg in brief

A city that refuses a simple story

Johannesburg does not offer itself as a polished preface. Gold built the city quickly; apartheid divided it violently; artists, migrants and neighbourhoods continue to remake it in public.

At Constitution Hill, old prison walls stand beside the Constitutional Court. Elsewhere, studios and street life reveal a city whose energy comes from argument, invention and arrival. The first road east feels different once South Africa has spoken in a human voice.

Begin where prison bricks face a living Constitutional Court. South Africa's road means more when its argument about freedom comes first.

Designer's note

Begin with Johannesburg's living history

I begin at Constitution Hill, then continue with a historian, artist or neighbourhood guide into the city around it. Johannesburg gives the journey a human beginning before the first safari dawn.

I open South Africa journeys with people, art and history before the first long road.

  1. 01

    Enter Constitution Hill

Move from former prison cells into the court built partly from their bricks.

    Past facing present
  2. 02

    Meet the working city

Follow a local voice through a neighbourhood, studio or market rather than watching Johannesburg through glass.

    Human orientation
  3. 03

    Leave east slowly

A settled first night protects the next morning's road into Mpumalanga.

    Arrival before distance

Johannesburg FAQ

Johannesburg travel questions

Q01How many days should I spend in Johannesburg?

At least one complete day after arrival. Two nights give the city time without stealing energy from the road east.

Q02Why begin Epic South Africa here?

Johannesburg is the principal international gateway and gives the journey its contemporary human beginning.
