Western Cape travel guide
Cederberg
The Cederberg lifts wind-shaped sandstone above fynbos valleys, rooibos country and San rock-art shelters. It begins the great drying of the north-western return.
Cederberg in brief
Stone, tea and painted shelter
The N7 leaves Cape Town's orbit and climbs into drier country. In the Cederberg, sandstone has been hollowed, balanced and split by weather until the mountains resemble a city abandoned by giants.
Rooibos grows within this narrow ecological home. San paintings remain in shelters above the valleys. Walking, tea and rock art belong together here, each revealing a different relationship between people and the mountain.
North of Cape Town, the city falls away quickly. Sandstone turns red, rooibos grows where it grows nowhere else and painted shelters hold older journeys.

Walk into the Cederberg
I give the Cederberg a full walking day: sandstone arches in the cool hours, rooibos country in the afternoon and San rock art with someone qualified to interpret it.

I connect mountain walking with rooibos culture and respectful rock-art interpretation.
- 01Morning mountain
Walk before heat
Cool first light gives the sandstone both colour and comfortable hours.
- 02Place-specific taste
Meet rooibos at its source
A grower can connect endemic plant, climate and work in one cup.
- 03Respectful interpretation
Enter painted stone carefully
Rock art belongs with expert context and protected access.

Cederberg FAQ
Cederberg travel questions
Q01How long should I stay in the Cederberg?
Three nights allow a walking day, a cultural or rooibos encounter and weather room.
Q02Is the Cederberg only for flower season?
No. Spring adds flowers, but sandstone, rock art and rooibos make it meaningful beyond the bloom.
