Augrabies Falls

The Orange River narrows at Augrabies and drops into a granite gorge with a voice that changes by season and upstream rain. Beyond the falls, arid rock stretches toward the Kalahari.

Augrabies in brief

A river forced through stone

The Orange River has crossed a vast dry interior before it reaches Augrabies. Here granite narrows the water and sends it into a deep gorge, raising spray and sound from below the viewing paths.

Flow changes. The park's enduring scene is the collision of river and arid stone. Quiver trees, broad rock and heat continue beyond the waterfall, preparing the eye for the red dunes farther north.

After flower country, the Orange River arrives as force: brown water, granite walls and a sound felt before the gorge comes into view.
