Machu Picchu
A royal estate built on a ridge between cloud forest and mountain, abandoned within a century and never found by the Spanish. Reached on foot over the pass, it is a different experience from the first morning train.

Machu Picchu, in short
Machu Picchu was a royal estate, not a lost city. It was built for Pachacutec in the middle of the fifteenth century, used for under a hundred years, and abandoned around the time of the Spanish arrival — which never reached it, which is why it stands.
How you arrive changes what it is. The first train from Ollantaytambo puts you at the gate with several thousand other people. Walking in over the Inca Trail's last pass, arriving at the Sun Gate in the early morning with the ruin below you and the cloud moving through it, is a different event entirely, and the reason to plan the permits months ahead.
Either way, book Huayna Picchu or Huchuy Picchu separately if you want the ridge above the site.

Each stop on the route is a deliberate step upward, which is what makes the high days enjoyable rather than survivable.

Sleep low before you go high
The Sacred Valley sits 600 metres below Cusco. Sleeping there first is the single change that most improves how people feel on the high days.
- 03Permits - February closure
Let the permit calendar lead
Inca Trail permits are capped and sell out months ahead, and the trail closes every February. That one date fixes everything else.

Highland rains, open coast
Inca Trail closed in FebruaryHeavy afternoon rain across the highlands makes the high roads unreliable and closes the Inca Trail every February. The desert coast and the Amazon stay workable, so the journey changes shape rather than stopping.
