Colca Canyon
A gorge more than twice the depth of the Grand Canyon, farmed in pre-Inca terraces that are still worked. Andean condors ride the morning thermals out of the canyon at the Cruz del Condor.

Colca Canyon, in short
The Colca is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, and unlike the Grand Canyon it is farmed. The terraces stepping down its sides are pre-Inca, cut by the Collagua people, and they are still worked.
The condors are the reason most people come. At the Cruz del Condor the birds rise on the morning thermals out of the gorge, sometimes passing at eye level with a three-metre wingspan. It is worth being there early and worth accepting that on some mornings they do not fly.
The drive in crosses the altiplano at 4,900 metres. That pass, not the canyon itself, is the day's real altitude test.

Build altitude as a gradient
Each stop on the route is a deliberate step upward, which is what makes the high days enjoyable rather than survivable.

Sleep low before you go high
The Sacred Valley sits 600 metres below Cusco. Sleeping there first is the single change that most improves how people feel on the high days.
- 03Permits - February closure
Let the permit calendar lead
Inca Trail permits are capped and sell out months ahead, and the trail closes every February. That one date fixes everything else.

High passes openCold, bright mornings above 3,000 metres and reliable trekking weather. This is the only dependable window for the high passes and the Inca Trail, and the reason most of the route is planned around it.

Highland rains, open coast
Inca Trail closed in FebruaryHeavy afternoon rain across the highlands makes the high roads unreliable and closes the Inca Trail every February. The desert coast and the Amazon stay workable, so the journey changes shape rather than stopping.
