I design journeys to places of power for those who want to travel deeper
Altiplano travel guide
Lake Titicaca
The highest navigable lake in the world at 3,810 metres, shared with Bolivia. Its islands hold Quechua and Aymara communities whose weaving, farming and governance predate the Inca.
Lake Titicaca in brief
Lake Titicaca, in short
Titicaca does not read as a lake. At 3,810 metres, 190 kilometres long, with weather that arrives from the horizon, it reads as an inland sea that happens to be fresh water.
The famous Uros reed islands are genuinely inhabited and genuinely built from totora reed, and also genuinely a day-visit economy. The islands worth the overnight are Amantaní and Taquile, where families host visitors, the weaving is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list, and men knit while they walk.
Bring warm clothes that you would consider excessive. The days are bright and the nights are brutal.
Lake Titicaca is one of the places I plan the rest of a Peru route around.

How I use Lake Titicaca
Lake Titicaca earns its days on the route rather than being a box to tick.

Alex
Journey designer
I design private Peru journeys around altitude, season and the people who still farm the terraces.
- 01Lima - Arequipa - Colca - Titicaca
Build altitude as a gradient
Each stop on the route is a deliberate step upward, which is what makes the high days enjoyable rather than survivable.
- 02Valley first - Cusco after
Sleep low before you go high
The Sacred Valley sits 600 metres below Cusco. Sleeping there first is the single change that most improves how people feel on the high days.
- 03Permits - February closure
Let the permit calendar lead
Inca Trail permits are capped and sell out months ahead, and the trail closes every February. That one date fixes everything else.

Q01How long should I give Lake Titicaca?
On the Epic Peru route Lake Titicaca holds its own block of days; the exact number depends on the season and how the altitude is treating you.
